  • Raleigh County offers a voluntary preschool program for all children regardless of ability. To be eligible for Raleigh County Preschool the child must be 4 years old prior to July 1 of the school year. Children who are 5 years old before July 1 should be enrolled in kindergarten. You will need to provide the following documents for enrollment: 

    1. Birth Certificate from the Office of Vital Statistics

    2. Social Security Card (Recommended)

    3. Proof of Income/Snap

    4. Immunization Record (Should be obtained from your child’s pediatrician.)

    5. Health Check (Should be obtained from your child’s pediatrician. This should include speech/language, vision, and hearing screenings.)

    6. Dental Check (Should be obtained from your child’s dental provider.)

    The preschool classrooms in Raleigh County are listed on the attached application. Please choose three schools that will best meet your family and child’s needs. You will select them in order of preference using the dropdown menus for School Choice 1, School Choice 2, and School Choice 3.

    Please note that your child's preschool site may or may not be in your home school district. Your home school district is the school your child will attend for kindergarten based on your physical address. Your choices will be considered prior to placement, but no choices are guaranteed.

    While your choices will be considered prior to placment, no selections are guaranteed. All placements are based on need, and there is absolutely no predetermined list for any site.

    Raleigh County Schools will ooperate on a five-day-a week schedule. Central Head Start and Sophia Head Start, will operate on a four-day-a week schedule, from Monday to Thursday.

    Only applications that are filled out completely will be considered for placement.

    Here’s what to expect:

    1. Complete the RCS Preschool Application and submit on or before April 21, 2025, for the first round of placements. Applications must be submitted online.

    2. Plan to attend the RCS Pre-K EXPO, April 17th at the Beckley Raleigh County Convention Center from 9:00AM-1:00PM. 

    3. While you are waiting for your child’s preschool placement, be gathering the necessary enrollment documents listed above.

    4. You will be contacted by your child’s school regarding placement on May 2, 2025. Then, on May 9, 2025, from 9:00AM-1:00PM, you will need to bring enrollment documents to the school.

    5. Your child’s enrollment will be pending until all documents are provided.

  • Transportation Policy and Procedures:

    AM Pick Up: (Home to School)

    · Authorized adult escorts the child to the bus door.

    · Student will sit in designated area at the front of the bus.

    · Upon arriving at school, school personnel will walk children to the school.

    · School personnel will receive children and take attendance.

    PM Drop Off: (School to home)

    · Preschool personnel will bring students to bus.

    · An authorized adult will meet and receive the student.

    · If no authorized adult is at bus stop, child will be returned to school at the end of the bus route.

    Policy for child not picked up at bus stop.

    · Bus driver informs the transportation department.

    · Transportation telephones the school and school contacts parent/guardian.

    · Bus driver will return child to the school and school personnel must meet the bus.

    · Parent will have to pick-up the child at the school.

    · If attempts to notify parents are unsuccessful after an hour, CPS will be contacted.

    Failure to Meet the Bus:

    · Following three failures to meet the bus in a school year, a conference between the school principal and parent/guardian will be required before the student may continue to ride the bus.

    · Following the required conference, should the parent/guardian or identified responsible person fail to meet the bus a fourth time in the school year, the student will lose transportation privileges for six weeks.

    · Following the six-week revocation of transportation privileges, a fifth failure of the parent/guardian or identified person to meet the bus in the school year, the student will lose transportation privileges for the remainder of the year.

    Attendance Agreement:

    1. Children should be in school every day that they are able.

    2. Parent/guardian must contact the school when the child is absent. The parent will send a written excuse to the teacher upon the child’s return to school.

    3. If the preschool classroom staff is not notified of the child’s absence on the day of the absence, it is the schools responsibility to make telephone contact with the family.

    4. After 4 consecutive unexcused absences or 5 unexcused absences by the child, the school will notify the social worker/attendance department.

    5. Direct contact, such as a home visit, telephone call, face to face or letter will be made by the social worker/attendance department to discuss the importance of school attendance, providing necessary support. A plan will be initiated and implemented to improve the child’s attendance. All contacts will be documented.

    6. If all previous procedures have been completed and the unexcused absences continue to 10 consecutive unexcused or 30 total unexcused, a meeting will be scheduled with the parent/guardian to discuss the possibility of disenrollment.

    7. If the child is dis-enrolled due to excessive unexcused absences, reenrollment is not guaranteed.
